Wavefront Lasik

Lasik is a well-known surgical procedure that treats such conditions as astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness by making a cut in the cornea and adjusting the corneal tissue, through ablation, found beneath the cornea. That pretty much describes traditional Lasik, but now there is a newer method, called wavefront lasik, that not only treats the conditions listed above but it also treats conditions that were impossible to treat with traditional Lasik, or even with eyeglasses or contact lenses.

What wavefront-guided Lasik does is to use a particular 3-dimensional measurement of the patient's eye in order to gauge how the eye processes images. This in turn will guide the laser in order to re-shape the cornea, which is the front division of the eye. Wavefront lasik is a tremendous advancement in the world of corneal surgery, as you can imagine.

The FDA has set forth special guidelines for this surgical procedure, and prior to taking advantage of wavefront lasik, you will need to fit into the candidate qualifications. This will depend on the existing thickness of your cornea, as well as what specifically your eye condition is, such as your particular vision defects, such as if you have astigmatism, hyperopia, or myopia. Thus if you have a mild to moderately high case of any of these defects, you may benefit from this new type of Lasik surgical procedure.

You see, wavefront lasik will demonstrate the smallest irregularities found in the way that your own eye will process images. It actually lays out a 3-D map showing the surgeon the exact custom treatment that is needed to correct the sight in your eyes. Not only will this fix the visual acuity you will have, or how much you will be able to see, but now this medical marvel can actually help in how well you see.

Medically this is referred to as fine detail vision and contrast sensitivity. Contrast sensitivity encompasses eye related problems such as the way that your eye deals with variable things like halos, shadows, glare and your night vision too. Not being able to see in low or dim light is an example of contrast sensitivity. Now, wavefront lasik can be used to treat those problems too!

eyeball irritation
As wonderful as wavefront lasik is, research continues to find corrections for high myopia, as an example. Research is also continuing in multifocal corrections. This would enable older patients who have presbyopia to be able to see once more in distant, middle and near ranges all at the same time, as they did when they were young!

If you have any vision related problems, as new technology appears, you have every chance of having those problems corrected. Find out by going to your local eye doctor or surgeon. Chances are very good that your problem is correctable now, perhaps by wavefront lasik, and not in the distant future.
