Intacs
If you are tired of wearing those glasses and are considering corrective eye surgery, you should know that there are other options available to you.
Intacs are implanted contact lenses. These corneal implants are a flexible alternate to surgery and the beauty is that they can be removed completely or replaced if your vision changes. These are perfect for people with moderate nearsightedness who want to keep their options open for the future.
Intacs corneal implants keep the cornea's natural shape and can be replaced or removed, as your future vision changes.
An ophthalmologist inserts
Intacs under the outer edge of the cornea as an outpatient procedure. These micro-thin cornea implants reshape the curvature of your cornea from the inside, to correct mild nearsightedness. This is different from laser surgery in that there is no corneal tissue removed from the central optical zone.
The wearer cannot feel Intacs once they have been implanted and they are no more visible than
regular contact lenses. There is also no maintenance is required. More than 97% of patients with Intacs corneal implants pass the driver's license vision test without the glasses or contact lenses. More than 50% of users have their vision corrected to 20/20.
The way these Intac corneal implants work with nearsightedness is by adjusting the shape of your cornea to let light rays to focus exactly on the retina, which results in clear,
sharp vision. With nearsightedness, the problem is that the light rays passing through your cornea are not focusing properly on the retina.
Since lasers reshape your cornea by removing tissue from the central optic zone, this is a permanent alteration to the eye since the tissue cannot be put back. If and when laser patients need any
adjustment to their vision or if the prescription changes, additional tissue needs to be removed. With Intact corneal implants, no tissue is removed.
If an adjustment is needed in the future, Intacs can be replaced with a different size. Intacs can also be removed if necessary and clinical studies show that on this instance, all patients were corrected to 20/20 vision.
Intacs corneal implants are FDA- approved and are also approved for pilots (FAA) There have been over eleven years of clinical studies that have verified the success of these implants.
In order to have Intac corneal implants you must be over 21, have
healthy eyes, and have had stable vision for one year.
Intacs are designed for nearsightedness and for people whose correction is 1.00 -3.00 diopters, astigmatism not exceeding 1.00 diopters. To find out of these implants are right for you, you must speak to your
eye care professional as only a qualified physician can make this determination.
