Augenlaser
In German
augenlaser translates as an eye laser, thus they are speaking of laser surgery in order to correct someone's vision so that contact lenses or glasses are no longer needed.
Augenlaser, or laser eye surgery will reshape the patient's cornea, which is the clear front portion of a patient's eye. This, in turn will change the eye's focusing power.
There are many different types of such
laser eye surgery. Lasik – which literally stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis – is currently the most common. A tremendous amount of patients who undergo Lasik will end up having 20/20 vision. However, as in all medical procedures, there are both risks as well as benefits. Your eye doctor will be able to tell if you are considered a good candidate for this procedure, augenlaser, or laser eye surgery.
There is a new type of Lasik surgery considered to be quite an advanced medical procedure that not only provides the patient with much better, or 20/20, eyesight, but it also allows for tiny imperfections in the eye to be removed so that the visual acuity is much better but also now contrast sensitivity that creates problems with halos, shadows, glare as well as your night vision too can be cleared away as well. This is performed using an
augenlaser as well, and it is called wave front Lasik.
The "old" way of performing Lasik surgery involved the actual cutting of the cornea with a blade to make the flap that enabled the doctor to correct the corneal tissues underneath. This was followed by bladeless Lasik which uses a laser (augenlaser) to not only create the flap for the doctor, but also helps the doctor to actually reshape the cornea, since it is the shape that creates such visual problems as nearsightedness, farsightedness as well as astigmatism.
Prior to the medicinal variety of
laser-assisted technology that even cuts the flap for the doctor, there was also a procedure that still used a laser (augenlaser) but did not cut the cornea at all. It was, and still is used as one of many surgical options, in order to change the cornea. It is called PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), and also is used to improve vision while reducing and perhaps eliminating the patient's need for contact lenses or eyeglasses.
PRK requires a bit more of post-operative cares though. For instance the patient will use prescription eye drops for a few months. Anti-inflammatory agents are also used in order to reduce any eye swelling. Also while the eye heals, they are fitted with a contact lens that acts as a bandage, which improves
the patient's comfort.
If your eye doctor feels that you are a good candidate for eye surgery, all of it will be explained to you in
great detail, so that you know exactly what to expect. Further, it will be explained to you how diligent post-operative care will help you and your doctor to identify and address any potential healing complications that you may have following your laser (augenlaser) surgery.
